How to enter scores and advance teams

What you will learn

  • Why a score is the only input the bracket needs
  • What happens when you correct a result late
  • Habits that keep you out of that situation
  • Why there is no separate record to update

Takes about 2 minutes per game.

Learn how entering a score moves the winner forward on its own, and what happens when you have to correct a result after the next game has already been played.

Open the tournament in your account. Each game takes two scores, and that is the whole job during a weekend.

Before you start

  • A tournament saved in your account
  • One named person doing the scoring

Entering a result

A single game on a tournament bracket in Playbook Logix, showing the two seeded team names above a score box for each, with a Save button and a Cancel link
One game, two numbers. The bracket does the rest.

Type both scores and save. The winner is placed into whichever game it feeds, and in a double elimination bracket the loser drops into the losers bracket rather than disappearing.

You never place teams yourself. Every game already knows where its winner goes and where its loser goes, worked out when the bracket was generated, so a score is the only input the bracket needs.

Correcting a result

You can change a score you have already entered. If nothing downstream has happened yet, it simply updates.

This is the situation worth understanding before it happens at seven in the evening. A wrong result in round one does not stay in round one: the team that should have advanced did not, and everything that team would have played is now fiction.

The honest answer is that there is no version of this that does not cause disruption. The software can recalculate the bracket; it cannot un-play the games. What it gives you is a clear statement of what is about to be undone, so you can decide whether to correct the record or let it stand.

Getting it right the first time

Since a late correction is genuinely painful, a few habits are worth more here than in most of the product.

  • One person enters scores. Decided in advance, not worked out on the day.
  • Take the score from a scorecard, not from memory, and definitely not from a parent who watched the end.
  • Check the bracket after each round, not at the end of the day. A wrong result caught within the round costs you one correction; caught two rounds later it costs you an argument.
  • Enter the losing score too. It is what proves the result later when somebody disputes it.

Records are worked out, not stored

A team's wins and losses are derived from the games it has played rather than kept as a running total. There is no counter to correct, so fixing a score fixes every record that depended on it at the same moment.

What parents see

Everything you enter appears on the public tournament page as soon as it is saved. There is nothing to publish again and no second step.

Common questions

How do teams advance in the bracket?
Automatically. Enter both scores and the winner is placed into the game it feeds, while in double elimination the loser drops into the losers bracket. Every game already knows where its winner and loser go.
Can I change a score after I have entered it?
Yes. If nothing downstream has happened it simply updates. If the teams that game sent forward have already played, the app warns you first that the change affects more than one game, because those later results cannot stand.
What happens if I enter a wrong result and only notice later?
The bracket can be recalculated but the games cannot be un-played. You will be told exactly what is about to be undone, so you can decide whether to correct the record or let it stand. Checking after each round is what avoids this.
Do I need to update team records separately?
No. Wins and losses are worked out from the games played rather than stored as a running total, so there is no counter to correct and fixing a score fixes every record that depended on it.
When do parents see a score?
As soon as you save it. The public page reflects it immediately, with nothing to publish again, which is why entering scores as games finish beats doing them in batches.
